Located in southwest Saskatchewan where Highway 21 meets Highway 32, about 30 km (18.6 mi.) from the Alberta border, Leader is home to around 1,000 people. The local economy is based on grain, cattle, tourism, and retail.

Leader sits 10 km (6.2 mi.) south of the South Saskatchewan River in an area of flat plains and rolling hills. Tourist Information is in an old CNR Caboose. The Leader Millenium Gardens offer walking paths and a gazebo, and hint at the great outdoors surrounding Leader. The Great Sandhills are about 19 km (11.8 mi.) east of town, and feature a prairie desert-like landscape of sand dunes intermixed with prairie grasses, shrubs, and small stands of trees. The Great Sand Hills Museum offers a glimpse into times gone by, with a boarding house, school, hospital, livery stable and other rooms. About 13 km (8.1 mi.) to the west of Leader are the scenic Checkerboard Hills.

The Smith Barn Site displays a scale model of what was the largest barn in North America. North of town, the South Saskatchewan River valley is home to the Leader Bird Watching Trail, with over 200 species of birds. South of Leader is the pretty 1915 Blumenfeld Church, and the 1920's St. John's School one room schoolhouse. Visitors will also notice a number of large roadside attractions of the area's animals scattered around the Leader region.
